Armed Forces TV Licensing

In Ministry of Defence (MOD) accommodation, on or off base, anyone who watches or records television programmes as they’re being shown on TV, on any device, must be covered by a TV Licence. This includes computers, laptops, TVs, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.
Armed forces personnel are not usually covered by their home TV Licence while living on base. In service accommodation, they’re only covered by their home licence if they watch TV using a device that’s powered solely by its own internal batteries, and it is not plugged into the mains or an aerial.

The MOD fully supports us in administering TV Licensing legislation.
It costs £145.50 for colour & £49.00 for a black and white TV Licence.

Forces Help to Buy Scheme Extended to 2018

The Secretary of State for Defence today announced the excellent news that the very popular Forces Help To Buy scheme will be extended into 2018. As you will be aware, the scheme which was launched in 2014, allows serving military personnel to borrow up to half their salary up to a cap of £25,000, interest free over ten years so they can buy their first home, extend a current one or move up the property ladder.

The news is featured on the Armed Forces Covenant website https://www.armedforcescovenant.gov.uk/housing-development/ and includes comments from L/Cpl Baffour Asante whose family has benefitted from the scheme.

HM Forces Bovis Homes offer

At Bovis Homes we understand the unique time pressures that those serving in the armed forces face.

The Armed Forces All Inclusive Discount Scheme has been designed not only to minimise the potential financial outlay of buying a new home, but some of the hassle and hidden costs that go along with it.
This exclusive package includes:

• A price discount of £500 for every £25,000 you spend on a Bovis Home. This equates to 2% of the list price.

• All curtains, carpets and flooring included. This means you won’t need to worry about measuring up, just bring your furniture!

• Bovis Homes will also contribute £500 towards your legal costs (when you use one of our referred independent solicitors).

• As well as all of this, with the Bovis Homes specification you get built-in kitchen appliances (from Hotpoint and Indesit) included in the price as standard. So that’s the hob, oven, fridge freezer, washing machine* and dishwasher* sorted too.

Armed Forces Covenant – Book Initiative!

Making a difference - working together with our colleagues from the library service across Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire, following our recommendations, they have been able to provide additional support for Service Children, their families and those families with a close service connection, by introducing a selection of relevant books into our local libraries –including specific publications which look at the issues facing children/families from a serving background.  These books are also appropriate for children from non-serving/ex-serving families, to help foster a greater understanding of the issues faced by their peers.
In Warwickshire the school’s library service and the mobile library service have also taken up this initiative.   Our colleagues working with the mobile service have reported that this has been a great success with the books being very popular particularly at Bramcote barracks.   For more information regarding the titles of books now in stock visit our website

or contact your local library service.

Planesaver Credit Union

How we helped a fellow serviceman save £254 on monthly loan repayments.

Military personnel sometimes have limited access to financial services and particularly affordable credit, leaving them a potential target for high cost credit providers such as payday lenders and loan sharks.

We were recently approached by a serviceman who found himself in a spiral of debt, with a series of high interest Credit Card and Payday loans, with monthly repayments over £555 at an average interest rate of 244% APR.

We were able to lend to the individual responsibly, consolidating his existing debt into one manageable repayment straight from his pay.

We paid off all his existing borrowing, leaving the member with a new monthly repayment of £301 at a more favourable interest rate, meaning he could get back on track with his finances.

The serviceman said "Plane Saver guided me into making better financial decisions, this has made me more aware of how expensive some loans can be. Seeking help from the credit union helped me nearly halve my outgoings on debt. Thank you Plane Saver".

Carillion Amey - Improvements to Disabled Adaptations

Have you got the MOD ICE app? 20,000 others have!

The MOD ICE (In Case of Emergency) app produced by the Ministry of Defence’s Joint Casualty and Compassionate Centre (JCCC) has now been downloaded 20,000 times by British service personnel and their families since its launch in October 2015.

The JCCC, part of Defence Business Services (DBS), provides a focal point for casualty administration and notification and requests for compassionate travel (for those personnel serving overseas) in respect of members of the British Armed Forces at any time and will take immediate action for service personnel and their families when an emergency occurs. JCCC offers immediate support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to all in uniform and their loved ones should an incident occur.

As part of the JCCC’s work, the team developed the MOD ICE app that offers a ‘click and call’ facility to direct the user to the most appropriate source of help if they are faced with a family emergency. The app guides the user to the correct point of contact even if the emergency is to be managed outside of JCCC’s remit, for example by service welfare or a charity partner.

Available from the Defence Gateway internet site – www.defencegateway.mod.uk MOD ICE has reached 20,000 downloads in just nine months, but the aim is for all members of the British Armed Forces and their families members to have the app on their phone or mobile device.

To download MOD ICE for Apple or Android devices, Service Personnel need to visit Defence Gateway on the mobile device that they wish to host the app. From the App Store, they can download the free app and then repeat the action with the relevant devices of family members. MOD ICE can be downloaded multiple times from the same Defence Gateway account.

Once downloaded, the Service Person’s name, rank and service number, together with the most relevant welfare officer’s details are entered into the app. It’s then ready for use by both the Service Person and their wider family at any time of day or night – whenever it is needed.

MOD ICE runs alongside the JPA P001 card. It is imperative that Service Personnel should also remember to keep their Emergency Contact and Next of Kin details on Joint Personnel Administration (JPA) up to date and make and maintain a current Will.

Window restrictors in Service Family Accommodation Important - Window Safety Check Required

As we approach the warmer months of the year, it is really important to check that the window restrictors in the upstairs of your property are working correctly, especially if you have children.
You can do this by:
·         Engaging the window restrictor (putting the lock/latch on) and trying to fully open the window. The restrictor should only allow the window to be opened a small way
·         Look at your window restrictor. It should have the BS kite safety mark stamped on it (shown below)

If you are concerned that your window restrictor is not working correctly please call us on 0800 707 6000 option 1.

If you are moving into your property, your Accommodation Officer will check the window restrictors for you and show you how they work.

Changes to Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme

Changes have been made to the MOD’s funding schemes for personal and professional development.
New policy governing the Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) and further and higher education schemes will make it easier to qualify for this financial support; however it will also mean that a Serving Person planning to use ELC to re-train, they will need to use up their credits within five years, not 10.
Find out more about ELC, which can help you in transition at www.enhancedlearningcredits.com

More information on the changes is available from the ELCAS website using this link:
