Why am I doing it?

The Smiley Riley Fund UK was originally set up to help pay for Riley Plant of York to travel to Disneyland USA when he was diagnosed at the age of 16 months in April 2012 with a rare grade 4 ATRT brain tumour.
Unfortunately in July 2012 and half way through his gruelling chemotherapy Riley’s family were given the devastating news that Riley’s cancer had spread to the fluid around his brain and the treatment was failing, Riley’s chemotherapy was then stopped and Riley was given weeks to live.
The support from family, friends and the people of York was outstanding, and local press coverage of Riley’s story melted the toughest of hearts, and donations flooded in. Doctors warned his family not to travel overseas so the fund paid for Riley and his family to have 6 short holidays in the UK creating lasting and beautiful memories of Riley doing simple things such as building sandcastles, which he had never done in his short life. Sadly Riley passed away in September 2012 aged only 21 months surrounded by the love of his family.
Riley’s Grandmother Simone Potter who founded the fund along with the wishes of Riley’s parents Gavin and Linzi continued the fund, to create an ever lasting legacy for Riley. We now work alongside national charity Brainstrust to offer financial support and travelling costs while children are having treatment. Brain tumours kill more children than any other cancer and we are creating much needed co-ordinated support for the children and their families and carers. We also donate to Martin House Children’s Hospice.
Riley was a courageous young boy who has inspired us to continue this fund and help others like him after seeing the devastating effect that cancer and chemotherapy has on children, Riley did lose his battle with cancer but he never lost his smile…..we all love Riley…..share the love…
