Message from Reading Force

It’s been a very busy summer at Reading Force – which culminates in a nationwide cycle ride to raise money for our charity. Not content with undertaking Ride London in aid of Reading Force, this time our intrepid cyclist is travelling from Land’s End to John o’Groats. If you would like to sponsor him, the link is here.

The period of Covid has been our most hectic time ever, as so many Forces families have found we offered a refreshingly simple way to remain in touch. We also celebrated our tenth anniversary with an online event at which the Chief of Defence Staff, commented on the valuable service we offer to Forces families. We heard from all the staff team at RF and announced new ventures such as the exciting new materials for teenagers which will be available very soon. The event finished with us being read to by internationally renowned author Sir Michael Morpurgo.

Later the same week we returned to Wavel School in Aldershot, where we first began – and were delighted that award-winning author Meg Rosoff came with us to celebrate ten busy years.

Wherever you are this summer, do get in touch so we can equip your Forces family with reading materials that keep everyone in touch.

Very best wishes to all, Alison, Hattie, Elaine, Fiona, Judith and Paula.

Research Project: Accessibility of NHS Dental Services for British Army families

Over 37 Provision: Waiver of SLA Accommodation Charges; widening of E&E.

Background. The Over 37 Provision is intended to support Service Personnel in the latter stages of their career to settle their family and serve unaccompanied. To enable and support this provision SP can access a SLA waiver of accommodation charges. This supports unaccompanied service in the latter part of a SP career.

Ref. JSP 752 Version 47 dated 1 Jul 21 Ch 12 Sect 7.

Policy Development. From 1 Jul 21 the SLA waiver element of the Over 37 Provision will be widened. Historically this has been linked to the UK and has not been accessible to SP with a Specified Personal Residence (SPR) overseas. This restriction to the SLA waiver will be removed.

The SLA waiver authority has been moved from JSP 752 to JSP 464. While policy direction exists in JSP 752 the authority for this policy now rests within JSP 464 coalesced with the other Service SLA waivers. This policy change is expected to impact c.140 SP who have family overseas and have, up to 1 Jul 21, been charged SLA accommodation rates. APSG have reinforced this policy change down the FC. Units have been directed to review their affected cohort in line with the updated JSP 752 policy (Ref A).

Future Accommodation Model (FAM) Pilot Success Story

The way people live and work is changing and the Future Accommodation Model (FAM) is reflecting this by improving the accommodation offer for a modern Defence. FAM gives more choice to support the needs of Service personnel over where, how and with whom they live.

FAM pilot success story…
FAM have been speaking to Service personnel on the pilot about how they’ve benefited from FAM.

RAF Corporal, Steven and his wife Keely share their story about how, with the help of their FAM Cell, they were approved for a larger Service Family Accommodation (SFA) property that would have previously been unobtainable if based off rank. Their new SFA affords the family with the space they need to live and grow.

Button Batteries - Where are yours?

If a big, powerful lithium coin cell battery – a thin button battery like a 5 pence piece – gets stuck in a small child’s food pipe, it can cause catastrophic internal bleeding and even death.

So it’s important to keep everyday objects with easily accessible batteries out of children’s reach, as well as spare and even ‘flat’ batteries.

The poster above helps you find button batteries in your home, so you can keep your children safe. Please share it as widely as possible.
