Joining Forces Credit Unions – now available to civilian staff on Discover My Benefits

As part of the commitment to improve financial wellbeing in the MOD, Joining Forces Credit Unions are now available to civilian staff as well as the military.

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that provide a range of savings and loan products to their members. They incentivise strong financial wellbeing by encouraging saving, as well as being ethical lenders that can provide lower interest rates than high street lenders.

There are three Credit Unions available to military and civilian MOD staff under the Joining Forces banner. You can find out more about what Credit Unions are, and about the three different types, on Discover My Benefits.

Discover My Benefits is regularly updated with the latest benefits and support available to both MOD civilians and those in the Armed Forces. It’s the place to go to find out the benefits you are entitled to and how to access them.

A survey is currently being run to find out what users think of the site, and to identify any areas of improvement to make the experience of using Discover My Benefits better. If you visit the site and spend a bit of time on there, you may be asked to complete the survey - it would be really helpful if you could take the time to give your views.

World Blood Donor Day 14 June 2021 – Army Campaign

The Army is supporting the NHS to increase the number of new blood donors through a partnership that will run to World Blood Donor Day on 14 Jun 21.  Blood must be used within 35 days of a donation so it’s important to run this over a longer period and help close the NHS deficit of 4000 donors.

Every type of blood is important and will help to save a life.  If you are Regular or Reserve, an MOD employee or family member, your contribution matters.  Please check if you can give blood then register with your regional blood and transplant services:

England - NHSBT

Scotland - SCOTBLOOD

Wales - Welsh BTS

Northern Ireland - NIBTS

When you have registered fill in our short survey so we can count your contribution towards the 4000 target.

The NHS needs more male, black heritage and universal donors, so if you fall into one of these categories you are likely to be fast tracked.

NHS: Covid-19 Vaccine Update - New Guidance for Pregnant Women

The JCVI has advised that pregnant women should be offered the #COVID19 vaccination at the same time as everyone else, based on age and clinical risk. There have been no specific safety concerns from COVID-19 vaccines in relation to pregnancy.

If you're pregnant, you should be offered the COVID-19 vaccine when you're eligible. You'll be offered the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna vaccine because they've been used more in pregnancy in other countries and have not caused any safety issues.

Official Relief Efforts for St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG)

On 08:41 (SVG time) 9th April 2021 an explosive eruption began at the La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent. There have been 9 eruptions so far and Scientists have predicted that the eruptions may continue for weeks or even months. An evacuation effort is already underway for residents living in the island’s northern region where the volcano is located, referred to as the red zone. Approximately 20,000 people (20% of the population) have so far been evacuated.

While the National Emergency Management Organisation is busily responding to the unfolding situation, it is recognised that it is also important to offer support during the disaster and post-disaster recovery. Falling ash, pyroclastic flows and severe flooding have destroyed homes, crops, livestock and contaminated water supply. According to the country’s prime minister the people in some shelters are in need of food, water and basic necessities. While the country have received support from its neighbours in the region there is still a great need for more assistance.

Any donation will be greatly appreciated as this would ensure that persons directly affected will receive the critical support needed to get through this disaster and to prepare for life post-disaster recovery. To donate to the response to the La Soufriere eruption please go to the GoFundMe page This has fundraising the approval of the St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Government, Prime Minister and High Commission
