Red Passport Holders Warned to Check if Still 'Valid' after Major Rule Change

Those who are still using red passports are being warned to pay careful attention to a rule change which could catch them out.

Red passport holders are being urged to check if their travel document is still valid before travelling abroad after a major rule change.

When UK left the EU last year, a new blue passport design with the lettering 'BRITISH PASSPORT' replaced the original red which is slowly being phased out.

However, those who are still using red passports are being warned to pay careful attention to a rule change surrounding expiry dates which could catch them out.

Passports are now only valid for 10 years exactly - additional months on anyone's red passports (passports issued before the UK left the EU ) are no longer valid.

This could reduce the validity time by several months without people being aware.

"Example: passport issue date 21st Jun 2012, passport expiry date 21st Dec 2022.
"Your passport expiry date is now the 21st Jun 2022.

"Most countries in the EU require that your passport is valid for six months on the date of return from your holiday, some countries it’s three months, meaning the last date you could return on the above example would be the 21st Dec 2021."

The government advises you check your passport is valid before you travel abroad.

Since 2020, those renewing or applying for a new passport has been issued the new, blue design.

How To Find A Walk-In COVID19 Vaccination Site

The NHS England website offers a 'Find my nearest walk-in vaccination' service using postcodes to search your nearest vaccine clinics.

You do not need to book an appointment for a walk-in clinic, you can just turn up during the opening times.

Please make sure you are aware of which vaccines are being offered at the clinic before you arrive.

People who attend a walk-in clinic for their first dose will have their vaccination record updated online and will then be able to book in their second dose appointment using the national booking system. Second jabs are also available at the walk-ins, if it has been at least eight weeks since your first dose.

Please remember to bring a face mask with you, unless you’re exempt, and have something to eat and drink before you leave home.

Update from Veterans UK

We have been receiving requests for information on veterans ID Cards.
Behind the scenes there is a lot of work going on at present across Government, the Charity sector and other providers to improve services for veterans, all linked to the Armed Forces Covenant. The delay in offering an ID card to veterans more widely is partly so that the Department can complete work to consider how best a future card, or veterans identity approach, can support these services for veterans in the future.

Government Launches UK Wide Antibody Surveillance Programme.

From 24 August, up to 8,000 people per day who opt-in and test positive with a PCR test will receive two antibody tests.

This will help to monitor levels of antibodies in positive cases and help to understand protection from antibodies after vaccination or infection.

Pension Sharing on Divorce

Veterans UK have identified a number of Armed Forces Pensions Scheme (AFPS) members who have a Pension Sharing Order in place which requires recalculation.

This is a result of an error made when applying DWP legislation to the Armed Forces Pension Schemes.

AFPS members affected by this issue will shortly receive a letter from Veterans UK notifying them of the situation and detailing their new entitlement. Personnel who have been overpaid will not have the overpayments recovered from them, and those who have been underpaid will receive any arrears due.

SSAFA - Bert Turner - 75 Years On

On July 17, the Tri Service & Veterans Support Centre united 97-year-old veteran Bert Turner with a plane called the Short Stirling Bombers at Alconbury Stirling Project. 75 years ago, Bert flew planes like this one during the Second World War.

Tri Service & Veterans Support Centre and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity’s Staffordshire branch has supported Bert in recent years, supporting his wellbeing.

Bert volunteered for the RAF in 1942 and by December 1943 was assigned to a squadron to start flying. His missions were based in Europe, in Stirling aircraft, as part of a crew of seven.

Bert Turner said:“I did about four bombing runs, but mainly I supplied the SOE, toed gliders, and dropped para-troops.”

“You started action when you got in the aeroplane in England. We were briefed for whatever we were going to do. You got in the aeroplane, took off and then you were in action. It didn’t stop until you landed again. A lot of it was very boring. Some of it was very hectic. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it’s the best way of explaining it, honestly.”

Sent on risky missions, Bert was shot down twice, but survived, earning his place in the Caterpillar Club – for bailing out of his aircraft using a parachute.

John Painter, Trustee and Treasurer at the Tri Service & Veterans Support Centre said:“We took Bert because he flew in the short Stirling Bomber in the Second World War as a flight Engineer. He was shot down twice over Arnhem and managed to get back to the UK safely both times.”

“Bert is visually impaired, but he knew what he was looking at and it was worth £1million to see him sitting in the dicky seat and looking at the controls that he had to check for real in the war. He was at home with his memories on that day and it was a pleasure to be with him.”

Kathy Munslow, Divisional Secretary at SSAFA Staffordshire:“Bert is an incredible man, and I am so pleased he got to spend the day at the Stirling Project. We are extremely proud of our veterans and their service.”

SSAFA has been providing lifelong support to our Forces and their families since 1885. If you are currently serving, a reservist, a veteran or from an Armed Forces family and need support in the Staffordshire area, contact Staffordshire.branch@ssafa.org.uk, call 01785 212 680 and visit ssafa.org.uk/staffordshire
